Se #5: the fake se — le lo becomes se lo

Before lo/la/los/las, le and les surface as se: se lo expliqué. Pure phonetics — this se has nothing reflexive about it.

Erklärung

Spanish bans the sequence le lo: the indirect pronoun changes shape — le + lo → se lo, les + las → se las. Se lo dije a ellos ('I told it to them').

Don't read meaning into it: this se is just le/les in disguise. Disambiguate the receiver with a él, a ella, a ustedes when context needs it.
