Irregular gerunds: durmiendo, pidiendo, leyendo, yendo

Erklärung

Three small groups cover all irregular gerunds. First, -ir stem-changers use the raised vowel — the same one as the preterite third person: dormir → durmiendo, morir → muriendo, pedir → pidiendo, sentir → sintiendo, seguir → siguiendo.

Second, when the stem ends in a vowel, the i of -iendo is written y: leer → leyendo, caer → cayendo, oír → oyendo, construir → construyendo, traer → trayendo. Ir itself is pure y: yendo.

Third, three one-offs: poder → pudiendo, venir → viniendo, decir → diciendo. Verbs in -ñir/-llir absorb the i: gruñendo, bullendo.
