conjugation.present.irregular-ser

Ser in the present: soy, eres, es

Fully irregular: soy, eres, es, somos, sois, son. The vos form is sos.

Explanation

Ser is suppletive — its forms come from different Latin verbs — so nothing about the present can be derived from the infinitive: soy, eres, es, somos, sois, son.

In voseo regions the form is vos sos (not *vos eres): sos boliviano, sos muy amable.

Ser expresses identity, origin, profession, time, and inherent characteristics; for states and location, Spanish uses estar — see the ser vs estar rule.
