About a dozen verbs have irregular participles: abrir → abierto, decir → dicho, escribir → escrito, hacer → hecho, morir → muerto, poner → puesto, romper → roto, ver → visto, volver → vuelto, cubrir → cubierto, resolver → resuelto, freír → frito.

Explanation
Regular participles end in -ado/-ido. A short list resists: abierto, cubierto, dicho, escrito, hecho, muerto, puesto, resuelto, roto, visto, vuelto, frito. They are used in every perfect tense (he hecho, había visto) and as adjectives (la puerta está abierta).
Derived verbs inherit the irregularity: descubrir → descubierto, devolver → devuelto, componer → compuesto, describir → descrito, deshacer → deshecho, prever → previsto.
A few verbs have two participles: a regular one for compound tenses and an irregular one used as an adjective — imprimir → he imprimido / un documento impreso; bendecir → he bendecido / agua bendita.
