Explication
To avoid identical vowels colliding: español e inglés, madre e hija; minutos u horas, uno u otro, ayer u hoy.
Exception: before hie-/hia- the h hides a diphthong /je/, not the vowel i, so y stays: agua y hielo, fibra y hierro. The test is sound, not spelling.
