El (masc. sing.), la (fem. sing.), los, las. The article is the gender flag of every noun phrase and repeats before each noun in a list: el pan y la leche.
Two mechanical twists live in their own rules: a/de + el contract to al/del, and feminine nouns starting with stressed a take el (el agua).
