Se marks third persons acting on themselves (se ducha) or on each other (se conocen). The most concrete of the five se's.

Erklärung
Reflexive: the subject and object are the same — se levanta temprano, se compró un auto ('bought himself'). Reciprocal with plurals: se escriben, se ayudan.
This is the entry point of the se system; the other four uses (accidental, passive, impersonal, le→se) recycle the same word for different grammar — each has its own rule.
