Three rules cover almost everything: unstressed vowel → add -s; consonant or stressed í/ú → add -es (papel → papeles, rubí → rubíes); final -z → -ces (vez → veces).
Adding -es can move the stress pattern, so accents appear or disappear: examen → exámenes, nación → naciones, joven → jóvenes.
