Unmodified profession/identity after ser drops the article: es abogado, soy canadiense. The article returns with an adjective: es un abogado excelente.
Also no article after sin/con (sin coche, con paciencia), in tener-phrases (tengo coche, no tengo hermanos), and never before otro, medio, cien, mil, tal: dame otro, espera media hora — *un otro is a French/English calque.
