Qué asks for definitions or things; cuál picks from a set; quién(es) asks about people; cuánto/a/os/as asks quantity. All carry accents in questions.

¿Qué es esto? asks what something is; ¿cuál prefieres? selects among options. Before a noun, qué is standard (¿qué libro?); before ser, cuál is usual when not asking for a definition: ¿cuál es tu número? (not *qué es tu número).
Quién/quiénes agrees in number (¿quiénes vienen?). The accents distinguish question words from relatives: qué vs que. Indirect questions keep the accent: no sé qué hacer.
